Eye Myths: 13 Common Myths And The Facts About Eyes

Today I am here to bust some eye myths. 

Just because something is a common belief doesn't make it a fact.

In the past, it was believed that cigarette smoking was good for your health.

Today we know that it kills you slowly and painfully.

That is why myth has to be busted so that we know what is best for us.

Knowing how to take good care of your eyes is the first step to protecting your sight for a lifetime.

Here are 13 common eye myths:

Eye Myth 1: You must wear glasses full time to avoid vision deterioration

Take off the glasses!

Even though glasses do aim us in seeing, you should not wear it for everything which you do.

If you are nearsighted, wearing glasses or contact lens while doing close-up work (such as reading) will only induce more near-point stress. 

Near-point stress is the main factor which makes your eyes to overwork and worsen your eyesight.

Likewise for farsighted corrective lens. If you use them for distant vision, you are adding unnecessary stress to your eyes.

Eye Myth 2: There is no need to go for eye check before you turn 40.

It may be too late by the time you go for eye check at 40. Some sight threatening diseases such as glaucoma can occur silently even before you reach 40.

If you detect it early, you can halt vision loss before it makes its move.

My recommendation is to go for an eye check up at least once a year.

Eye Myth 3: Sitting close to the television will harm your eyes

Sitting close isn't the one which harm your eyes, it is the number of hours you put in watching TV.

Long hours in front the screen causes immense amount of near-point stress which can increase nearsightedness

Sitting close to a TV may also be a sign of your child having myopia.

Give your eyes sufficient rest when you are doing close up work and learn some techniques to relieve eyestrain for healthy eyes.

Eye Myth 4: Reading in dim light harms your eyesight

Reading in dim light does not damage your eyes.

In the old days, people read and worked by candlelight or gas lamps that offered far less light than electric lighting. 

And they have no problem with eyesight.

However, reading in low light does make your eyes fatigue and causes eye strain.

Eye Myth 5: Eating carrots improve your eyesight

Carrots and eyesight

This myth is not entirely false. 

Carrots are high in vitamin A, a nutrient that is important for your eyes.

But you can get vitamin A from other food such as asparagus, sweet potato and apricots too. 

What matters is a balanced diet. 

Unless you suffer from vitamin A deficiency, which is rare in developed countries, it won’t improve your eyesight magically.

In fact, eating too much vitamin A can induce toxicity.

Eye Myth 6: Doctors can transplant eyes

I wish they could.

My dream was to get an pair of eyes that can shoot lasers.

What your doctor can do is transplanting of the cornea.

Currently, our state of medical science is unable to move the retina and optic nerve as they are a part of the brain.

Until the day when doctors figure out how to transplant the brain then they may be able to transplant the eye.

Eye Myth 7: Safety goggles are more trouble than they are worth

Protect your eyes!

They might not look cool and they may make you feel unmanly.

But in freak accidents, safety goggles can save you or your child from permanent blindness. 

There are more than 500,000 eye injuries every year in the U.S.

The leading cause of blindness in children is eye injury and 50% of these accidents occur at home.

In fact, 90% of injuries can be avoided by using proper eye protection.

Eye Myth 8: We inherit bad eyesight from our parents

Unfortunately this myth is true in several ways.

Many causes of bad vision are genetic but thankfully inheritance is not guaranteed.

Eye conditions which are inheritable include cataracts, glaucoma and strabismus.

Discuss your family's visual history with your doctor for help.

Eye Myth 9: As you get older, worsening of eyesight is inevitable

We are getting younger

Bust this eye myth.

Aging is inevitable but not the diseases that comes with aging. 

Take cataracts for example, not all people get cataracts when they become old. 

Cataracts happen due to oxidative stress and the breaking down of the proteins in your lens.

There are researches that states that balanced diet supplemented with eye vitamins may be useful in preventing cataracts. 

Giving up on smokingalcohol and controlling your blood sugar and cholesterol levels can also play a crucial role in preventing age related disease such as macular degeneration and vitreous detachment

Keeping your lens flexible by doing eye exercises can also help to keep farsightedness in bay.

At the very first signs of vision loss, such as blurred vision, spurge of floaters or flashes of light, you should see your doctor.

If detected early enough, depending on the cause, there are treatments that can correct, stop, or slow down the loss of vision.

If you are having blurry vision and does not wish to go through the surgery, pinhole glasses may be able to help you. There are reports where people with cataracts are able to see better with the pinhole technology.

Eye Myth 10: Only boys get color blindness

I was owned by this popular myth before.

Till date, I had not meet one girl who has color blindness like I do. So I thought only boys get this problem.

Color blindness, also known as color deficiency (a more accurate description), is a condition in which you are unable to see colors in the normal way.

Being colorblind, we have an altered sense of colors and are unable to distinguish between certain colors, commonly among greens and reds. 

Now I know that while males are much more likely to develop color blindness, females can also have the problem.

It is estimated that there are 8 percent of the male population with some sort of color deficiency while less than 1 percent of females are affected.

Eye Myth 11: Children will outgrow lazy eye or strabismus.


Intervene Early!

Believing this myth can cause permanent damage to your child’s life.

Both lazy eye and strabismus has to be intervened early. 

You have to intervene

If you wait.... By the time your child’s visual functions reach maturity, it might be too late to do anything.

The problems with strabismus and lazy eye could have already become permanent and your child has to live with a misaligned eye for their life.

Make sure that you child get an eye check-up regularly and apply the patching method to strengthen the weak eye if you notice a weakness in one eye early. 

The earlier you intervene, the higher chance of full recovery.

Myth 12: Computer usage can damage the eyes.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, computer use won't harm the eyes.

However, using a computer for long periods of time can cause Computer Vision Syndrome

We tend to blink less when we are concentrating on tasks such as reading and using computers.

This leads dry eyes and eye strain.

Encourage your kids to take frequent breaks from using computer and playing video games.

Apply the 20/20/20 rule - look at an object which is 20 meters away (like looking out of the window) for 20 seconds at every 20 minutes interval. 

Also, don’t forget to blink often.

Blinking relaxes and lubricates the eyes.

Myth 13: Too much sex and masturbation, can make you go blind.

I probably go blind with too little sex instead.

Come on, if this is true, doesn't it makes you wonder why Hugh Hefner isn't blind yet?

That old boy sure had enjoyed his tons of life actions.

The fact is Syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease, if left untreated causes blindness.

This is where this myth came from.
